Home » » REVIEW: Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.
Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.
With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.
But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle—a shifting maze of magical rooms—enthralls her.
As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.
My Review: Like it says in the blurb this book is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. But it's not your typical take on the tale. This novel has demons, magic, a Gentle Lord, a Shade, old gods, and a kick ass heroine. It was awesome how Nyx has been trained all of her life to defeat the Gentle Lord and she hates him with a passion but she ends up falling in love with him. I loved it when our resident beauty falls in love with the hero or in this case villain (depends on how you see his situation).
It was really unique to have both Ignifex and Shade be two sides of one coin. I had an inkling that Ignifex was a certain someone in this book and my hunch was not wrong. I did hate though that Nyx betrayed her husband, if only she had waited one more day. I understand that the Gentle Lord had to go but why Nyx why? Damn impatient woman. Just one more day. That's all he needed.
I loved all the snarkiness and attempted killings (made by Nyx) between Nyx and Ignifex. It made for an entertaining read and I couldn't help but laugh whenever they started in on each other. I definitely wish this book was longer and I hope another book in the series comes out. Why did this book have to end?
Rating: 4½ out of 5
